While we were still in the UK, lots of articles were written about the English Premier League. Many were considering this championship to be the most important in the world.
When you look at people in the streets here in Parakou, you realize that the Premier League is also important in Benin (certainly more than the French Ligue 1).
Many people are wearing shirts (genuine or not) of some Premier League clubs. The most visible club is Chelsea and I think it could be because of Didier Drogba from Ivory Coast in West Africa. I also see people wearing Arsenal shirts (maybe because of the Togolese player Abedayor) but few from Manchester United and Liverpool.
So it seems that the Premier League is really an important football league in the world. Though, to be fair, Barcelona F.C. is also an important club here and I saw a gathering of people into town celebrating Barcelona's victory in the Spanish Liga some weeks ago.
