Christianity in Benin

In his book West African Christianity (Maryknoll, N.Y.: Orbis Books, 1983), Lamin Sanneh argues that Christianity has been in Africa since the first century CE. As a consequence, Christianity has been mixed with local cultures and it is not surprising to see many references to Christianity in advertising or on many other places.
A few examples of Christianity being used or referred to in daily life.

There is a company that sells petrol and its name is JNP. It took me a long time to discover that JNP stands for Jehova Nissi Petroleum. Jehova Nissi refers to the name of a place in the Old Testament and means ''the Lord is my banner'' (see Exodus 17:15).

In Cotonou I saw a building site and one of the companies responsible for the building of a bloc of flats is Betsaleel Building. Here again a reference to the Old Testament and especially to the man in charge of building the Israelites' tabernacle (see Exodus 31:2-5; 35:30-33; 36:2-5).
